You did a good job for a customer. They told their neighbour. The neighbour has your number on a scrap of paper. So what happens next?
They Google you.
It does not matter that you were recommended. Before anyone lets a stranger into their home or hands over a deposit, they look you up. They want to know you are real, local and sorted. If what they find is a half-finished Facebook page, a phone number on a directory listing, or nothing at all, some of them quietly move on to the next name.
What people are actually checking
When someone searches for you by name, or for your trade in their town, they are asking a handful of simple questions:
- Is this a real business?
- Do they cover my area?
- Have they done work like mine?
- Can I trust them in my house?
- How do I get hold of them?
A good website answers all five on one screen. That is the whole job.
Word of mouth still matters, it just needs backup
We are not saying word of mouth is dead. For most trades it is still the best source of work. But a recommendation gets you onto the shortlist, and the website decides whether you stay on it.
Think about it from the customer’s side. They have been given two names. One has a clear site with photos of finished jobs, the areas covered and a button to ring. The other has a Facebook page last updated two years ago. Both might be excellent tradespeople. Only one looks it.
The jobs you never hear about
The awkward part is that you never see the customers who looked you up and walked away. They do not ring to say they changed their mind. The phone just does not ring.
That is why a website is not a cost, it is cover for the work you already earn. Every recommendation you get is worth more if your online presence backs it up.
What a good first impression looks like
You do not need a huge site. You need a sharp one:
- Your trade and your area, clear in the first line
- A tap-to-call button that works on a phone
- Photos of your own finished work
- Your accreditations, insurance and guarantees
- Real reviews from real customers
That is exactly how we build every site, whether you are a roofer, a plumber or an electrician.
Being recommended gets you on the shortlist. Your website decides whether you stay on it.
Start with what you have
Search for your own business name on your phone right now. Look at what comes up, the way a customer would. If it makes you wince, that is the gap a proper website closes. See what we offer or get in touch and we will talk it through.
