Should a tradesperson put prices on their website?

Ask most tradespeople about pricing online and you get the same reply: “Every job is different.” And it is. But hiding every number leaves customers guessing, and guessing makes them nervous.

Why customers want a clue

When someone does not know whether a job costs hundreds or thousands, they hesitate. They might assume it is too expensive, or they might assume you are vague on purpose. Giving them a sense of scale makes ringing you feel safe.

What you can do without being tied down

You do not have to publish a rate card. There are gentler ways to give guidance.

Use “from” prices. “Boiler servicing from £X” or “Gutter clearance from £X” for simple, repeatable jobs.

Give ranges. “Most bathroom fits fall between £X and £Y, depending on size and spec.” Explain what moves the price.

Explain what affects the cost. Size, access, materials, condition and timing. A short list shows customers you price fairly and helps them understand your quote.

Say what is included. Does the price include materials, waste removal, clean-up and a guarantee? Clarity builds trust.

Offer a free quote. If you do, say so clearly.

What this does for you

  • Better enquiries. People who ring already know roughly what to expect.
  • Fewer time-wasters. Those looking for the cheapest possible job drop out early.
  • Stronger trust. Being open about cost makes you look confident and honest.
  • Less repetition on the phone. You answer fewer “how much is it?” calls.

What to avoid

  • Quoting prices you cannot honour
  • Leaving old prices on the site for years
  • Making comparisons with named competitors

Costs change. Decide who will keep the figures up to date, or phrase them as guidance, with “from” and “typically”.

What if I do not want to publish numbers?

That is your call. At the very least, explain how you quote: free visit, written quote, no pressure, no hidden extras. It addresses the worry without committing to a figure.

Customers do not need an exact price. They need to know ringing you will not be a nasty surprise.
