Over time, a business’s details drift. A new phone number goes on the van but not the website. The address changes but an old directory still shows the previous one. Each mismatch confuses customers and weakens your local search.
What to keep identical
Choose one version of each of these and use it everywhere:
- Business name: exactly as it appears on your van and invoices.
- Address: the same format every time, including postcode.
- Phone number: the same number, written the same way.
- Website address: one main domain.
- Opening hours and service areas.
Make a master record
Write the correct details in one document. When you need to fill in a new listing, copy from it. This also helps anyone who works on your marketing.
Find where you are listed
Search for your business name and phone number, and note every place that shows them: Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Facebook, directories, trade bodies and your own website. See what are citations.
Fix the differences
Update each listing to match the master record. Where you cannot log in, contact the site and ask them to correct it. Start with the ones customers see most.
When something changes
If you move, change number or rename the business, update every place straight away. Put it on a checklist so you do not forget any.
Keep your website footer correct
Show your name, address, phone number and email in the footer, in the same format as your listings. Put the same details in your Terms and Privacy pages. See your Google Business Profile.
Hidden addresses
If you work from home and have chosen not to show your address, make sure it is not shown on other listings either, which could undo your choice.
Consistency is a quiet but real trust signal. It takes an afternoon to fix and then a minute to maintain.
